Lenovo K800 packs an Intel Atom and Android
Android 2.3 Gingerbread running on an Intel Atom processor — that’s what the Lenovo K800 is all about. Definitely a first for a smartphone and Intel must be smiling big and wide.
This 4.5-inch Android smartphone is still a prototype but it’s likely that we will see more handsets running Intel’s Atom processor (specifically, the Intel Atom Z2460 “Medfield”) that used to be produced just for netbooks.
The Lenovo K800 packs some impressive specs — a 4.5-inch 720p HD screen, 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2460, 8MP camera, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, HSPA+, NFC, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS. This handset is still running Android 2.3 though and no word if it can be readily upgraded to Android 4.0 ICS.
Of course, if you compare that to the mobile processors from Qualcomm and Nvidia, Intel seems to be a bit behind (a single core CPU versus dual-core and quad-core processors). However, early benchmark results showed the Medfield processor doing pretty good results.
The Lenovo K800 will be released in China first by 2nd quarter of 2012.
